Being Well Doing Well (BWDW)

Being Well Doing Well (BWDW)

At Rossmar, we are proud to be part of the Being Well Doing Well (BWDW) programme, a Northern Ireland initiative that supports schools in promoting emotional health and wellbeing throughout the whole school community. The programme is part of the Children and Young People’s Emotional Health and Wellbeing in Education Framework and helps schools create an environment where everyone can thrive.

What does Being Well Doing Well mean?

Being Well Doing Well recognises that positive emotional health and wellbeing are fundamental to learning, achievement and personal development. Through a whole-school approach, it encourages schools to:

  • Create a positive, caring and inclusive school culture.
  • Promote emotional health and wellbeing for pupils, staff and families.
  • Develop strong relationships based on respect, belonging and support.
  • Build resilience and help young people develop the skills they need to cope with life's challenges.
  • Remove barriers to learning by supporting wellbeing and readiness to learn.

What is a Whole School Approach?

A Whole School Approach means that wellbeing is everyone's responsibility. It is embedded across all aspects of school life, including:

  • Leadership and school culture
  • Teaching and learning
  • Positive relationships
  • Early support and intervention
  • Staff wellbeing
  • Family and community engagement

This approach helps ensure that every member of the school community feels valued, included and supported.

What does this look like in our school?

As a special school, we recognise that emotional wellbeing is closely linked to learning, communication, independence and personal growth.   We have staff, parent, and pupil representatives who help create a school that champions emotional health and wellbeing  and is committed to:

  • Providing a nurturing and supportive environment.
  • Promoting positive mental health and wellbeing for all pupils and staff.
  • Listening to pupil voice and supporting individual needs.
  • Working in partnership with families and external agencies.
  • Continuously reflecting on and improving our wellbeing practices.
  • Working towards becoming level 3,  Five Ways to Wellbeing school. https://www.publichealth.hscni.net/publications/take-5-steps-wellbeing
