Horizons caters for the holistic needs of all students, allowing them to access education in a manner that is suitable to each individual. Sensory challenges can affect a student’s ability to take in information, respond to requests, participate in social situations, write, participate in sports, and maintain a calm and ready to work state.
Self-regulation, which includes controlling one’s impulses, is an area that we work on extensively with our students. We teach an array of self-regulatory skills with the aim of each student being able to implement them independently, with a reminder from a trusted adult. Our staff use specific strategies to address each student's pattern of sensory processing to help the student adapt to the classroom environment.
